Washington, DC rules that affect a paycheck
- The District of Columbia taxes income from 4% up to 10.75%, and the 8.5% rate already applies from $60,000 of taxable income, according to the rate table in the Office of Tax and Revenue's 2026 estimated-tax booklet.
- Unemployment insurance in Washington, DC is paid by employers only; Alaska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are the states that withhold a worker share.
- The District's minimum wage rose from $17.95 to $18.40 an hour on July 1, 2026, for all workers regardless of employer size. Full-time at that rate is $38,272 a year, which keeps $31,801.24 after tax for a single filer.
- 2026 standard deduction: $16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household.
- The District uses one rate table for every filing status, so a joint return gets no wider brackets — only the larger $32,200 standard deduction, which matches the federal amount. The rates are the table printed in the Office of Tax and Revenue's 2026 estimated-tax booklet. DC's Paid Family Leave tax is paid entirely by employers and may not be taken from wages.
- Wage earners file a Washington, DC return as well as the federal one; for 2026 income both are generally due April 15, 2027.
