Each foreign figure is the local salary that leaves the same take-home as the US salary, after that country's income tax and employee contributions, rounded up to the next 100. US single filer, 2026 rules; UK 2026/27; Australia 2026-27. Rates: A$1 = $0.695, £1 = $1.333 (Federal Reserve H.10, noon buying rates in New York, 2026-10-16).
Why the systems differ
US Social Security takes 6.2% only up to $184,500 of wages, while UK National Insurance keeps charging 2% on every pound above £50,270. The UK has no state or city income tax, but Scotland sets its own bands (42% from £43,662 of salary), and between £100,000 and £125,140 the Personal Allowance is withdrawn — £10,000 more salary there adds £6,200 of tax and National Insurance in England.
Australia has no state income tax and no employee social-security deduction like FICA or National Insurance; instead a 2% Medicare levy sits on top of income tax, and retirement saving (superannuation) is paid by the employer on top of the quoted salary. From 2026-27 employees can deduct a flat $1,000 for work expenses, and the first rate falls to 15%. On A$100,000 that leaves A$77,800 ($54,071).
