South Carolina rules that affect a paycheck
- South Carolina's Act 110 of 2026 replaced three brackets with two: 1.99% of taxable income below $30,000, and 5.21% of taxable income minus $966 at $30,000 or more, the Department of Revenue's Information Letter 26-20 explains.
- Unemployment insurance in South Carolina is paid by employers only; Alaska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are the states that withhold a worker share.
- South Carolina's statewide sales and use tax rate is 6%, and counties may add 1% with voter approval.
- 2026 standard deduction: $15,000 single, $30,000 joint, $22,500 head of household.
- South Carolina's 2026 return starts from federal adjusted gross income, not federal taxable income, and replaces the federal standard deduction with its own South Carolina Income Adjusted Deduction: $15,000 for a single filer ($30,000 joint, $22,500 head of household), shrinking once AGI passes $40,000 ($80,000 joint, $60,000 head of household) and gone at $95,000 ($190,000 joint, $142,500 head of household). Employer withholding tables may lag these Act 110 changes, so paychecks can differ from the tax actually owed.
- Wage earners file a South Carolina return as well as the federal one; for 2026 income both are generally due April 15, 2027.
