Hawaii rules that affect a paycheck
- Hawaii runs twelve income tax brackets, from 1.4% up to 11%, and the 6.8% rate already applies from $24,000 of taxable income for a single filer, according to the Department of Taxation's rate schedule.
- Temporary Disability Insurance (employee share): 0.5% of weekly wages, at most $7.50 a week ($390 a year).
- Hawaii's minimum wage is $16.00 an hour from January 1, 2026. Full-time at that rate is $33,280 a year, which keeps $27,885.83 after tax for a single filer.
- Hawaii has no sales tax as such; its general excise tax on businesses is 4% on retail sales, plus a 0.5% county surcharge in counties that adopt one, and it is usually passed on to customers.
- 2026 standard deduction: $8,000 single, $16,000 joint, $12,000 head of household.
- Hawaii's 2026 standard deduction rose to $8,000 for a single filer ($16,000 joint, $12,000 head of household) under Act 46, and each personal exemption is worth $1,144. The rate schedule, with twelve brackets from 1.4% to 11%, is the one for taxable years after 2024.
- Wage earners file a Hawaii return as well as the federal one; for 2026 income both are generally due April 15, 2027.
