Washington rules that affect a paycheck
- Washington has no income tax on wages, but two state payroll premiums come out of most paychecks: Paid Family & Medical Leave and the WA Cares long-term-care fund.
- Paid Family & Medical Leave (employee share): 1.13% total premium, employee pays 71.43%, up to $184,500 of wages.
- WA Cares Fund: 0.58% of gross wages; approved exemptions do not pay, no wage cap.
- Washington's 2026 minimum wage is $17.13 an hour, the highest state rate on this site, and it rises to $17.73 in 2027. Full-time at that rate is $35,630 a year, which keeps $30,314.46 after tax for a single filer.
- Washington's state sales tax rate is 6.5%, and local rates are added by city and county.
- Because Washington does not tax wages, there is no state income tax return to file for salary income; the federal return for 2026 is generally due April 15, 2027.
