Tennessee rules that affect a paycheck
- Tennessee does not tax wages, and its Hall income tax, which reached only investment income, was repealed for tax periods beginning on or after January 1, 2021, according to the Department of Revenue.
- Unemployment insurance in Tennessee is paid by employers only; Alaska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are the states that withhold a worker share.
- Tennessee has no state minimum wage law, so the federal $7.25 applies to covered workers. Full-time at that rate is $15,080 a year, which keeps $13,926.38 after tax for a single filer.
- Tennessee's general state sales tax rate is 7%, before local option taxes.
- Because Tennessee does not tax wages, there is no state income tax return to file for salary income; the federal return for 2026 is generally due April 15, 2027.
