Pennsylvania rules that affect a paycheck
- Pennsylvania taxes compensation at a flat 3.07% with no standard deduction and no personal exemption, so state tax starts with the first dollar of pay.
- Unemployment compensation (employee share): 0.07% of total gross wages, 70 cents per $1,000, with no wage cap.
- Pennsylvania's minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, the federal rate. Full-time at that rate is $15,080 a year, which keeps $13,452.86 after tax for a single filer.
- Pennsylvania's sales tax rate is 6%, with 1% more in Allegheny County and 2% more in Philadelphia.
- No standard deduction and no personal exemption: tax applies from the first dollar of compensation.
- Local earned income tax (set by each municipality and school district, including Philadelphia's wage tax) and the Local Services Tax are not included, and neither is Pennsylvania's Tax Forgiveness credit for low-income households.
- Wage earners file a Pennsylvania return as well as the federal one; for 2026 income both are generally due April 15, 2027.
