New York rules that affect a paycheck
- New York taxes wages on nine brackets from 3.9% to 10.9%. 2026 is the first year of a rate cut: each of the five lowest rates is 0.1 point lower than in 2023-2025, and the law lowers them another 0.1 point for 2027.
- Paid Family Leave: 0.432% of gross wages, at most $411.91 for 2026.
- Disability benefits (DBL): 0.5% of wages but no more than 60 cents a week ($31.20 a year); employers may collect it.
- New York's minimum wage is $16.00 an hour in most of the state and $17.00 in New York City, Long Island and Westchester; the $16.00 rate is used here. Full-time at that rate is $33,280 a year, which keeps $27,544.99 after tax for a single filer.
- New York's state sales tax rate is 4%, and counties, cities and school districts add their own rate.
- 2026 standard deduction: $8,000 single, $16,050 joint, $11,200 head of household.
- Figures are New York State tax only. New York City and Yonkers residents owe a separate local income tax that is not included here.
- Wage earners file a New York return as well as the federal one; for 2026 income both are generally due April 15, 2027.
