Montana rules that affect a paycheck
- Montana has two rates in 2026: 4.7% on the first $65,000 of taxable income for a single filer ($130,000 joint, $97,500 head of household) and 5.4% above that, down from 5.65% in 2025.
- Unemployment insurance in Montana is paid by employers only; Alaska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are the states that withhold a worker share.
- Montana's minimum wage is $10.85 an hour from January 1, 2026, up from $10.55. Full-time at that rate is $22,568 a year, which keeps $19,890.74 after tax for a single filer.
- No separate state deduction: Montana taxes federal taxable income, so the federal standard deduction carries over.
- Montana starts from federal taxable income, so the federal standard deduction carries over; House Bill 337 lowered the top rate to 5.4% and widened the 4.7% bracket for 2026.
- Wage earners file a Montana return as well as the federal one; for 2026 income both are generally due April 15, 2027.
