Michigan rules that affect a paycheck
- Michigan taxes income at a flat 4.25% for 2026 (Treasury confirmed in April 2026 that the rate remains 4.25%) after a personal exemption of $5,900 per person.
- Unemployment insurance in Michigan is paid by employers only; Alaska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are the states that withhold a worker share.
- Michigan's minimum wage is $13.73 an hour from January 1, 2026, and rises to $15.00 on January 1, 2027. Full-time at that rate is $28,558 a year, which keeps $24,163.38 after tax for a single filer.
- Michigan charges a 6% sales tax on taxable retail sales and a 6% use tax on untaxed purchases.
- No standard deduction; 2026 exemption allowance $5,900 per person ($11,800 on a joint return).
- Michigan cities may levy their own income tax under the City Income Tax Act (Detroit's is administered by the state Treasury); city tax is not included here.
- Wage earners file a Michigan return as well as the federal one; for 2026 income both are generally due April 15, 2027.
