Massachusetts rules that affect a paycheck
- Massachusetts taxes wages at a flat 5%, with a 4% surtax only on income above $1,107,750 in 2026. There is no standard deduction; instead it allows a personal exemption and a deduction for up to $2,000 of Social Security and Medicare tax paid.
- Paid Family and Medical Leave: up to 0.18% (family) + 0.28% (medical) of wages, capped at the Social Security wage base, up to $184,500 of wages.
- Massachusetts' minimum wage has been $15.00 an hour since January 1, 2023. Full-time at that rate is $31,200 a year, which keeps $25,865.68 after tax for a single filer.
- Massachusetts charges a 6.25% sales and use tax.
- No standard deduction; 2026 exemption allowance $4,400 per person ($8,800 on a joint return).
- Paid Family and Medical Leave is shown at the most an employer may withhold (0.46%); some employers pay part of the worker share themselves.
- Wage earners file a Massachusetts return as well as the federal one; for 2026 income both are generally due April 15, 2027.
