Maryland rules that affect a paycheck
- Maryland taxes income in ten brackets from 2% to 6.5% (the 6.25% and 6.5% brackets were added for 2025 onward), and every county and Baltimore City adds its own income tax of 2.25% to 3.30% on the same taxable income.
- Unemployment insurance in Maryland is paid by employers only; Alaska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are the states that withhold a worker share.
- 2026 standard deduction: $3,350 single, $6,700 joint, $6,700 head of household.
- Maryland's county income tax is part of every resident's bill and is charged on the same Maryland taxable income as the state tax; it is included here.
- Wage earners file a Maryland return as well as the federal one; for 2026 income both are generally due April 15, 2027.
