Kentucky rules that affect a paycheck
- Kentucky taxes wages at a flat 3.5% in 2026 after a $3,360 standard deduction, and it has no personal exemptions.
- Unemployment insurance in Kentucky is paid by employers only; Alaska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are the states that withhold a worker share.
- Kentucky's minimum wage is $7.25 an hour under KRS 337.275. Full-time at that rate is $15,080 a year, which keeps $13,516.18 after tax for a single filer.
- Kentucky's sales and use tax is 6%, with no local sales taxes.
- 2026 standard deduction: $3,360 single, $3,360 joint, $3,360 head of household.
- Most Kentucky cities and counties levy an occupational license tax on wages (up to 1.25% in the largest counties under state law, plus city rates); it is not included. Figures start at $50,000 because Kentucky's Family Size Tax Credit can cut tax for lower incomes and its 2026 thresholds are not yet confirmed. The $3,360 standard deduction is applied once per return.
- Wage earners file a Kentucky return as well as the federal one; for 2026 income both are generally due April 15, 2027.
