California rules that affect a paycheck
- California taxes wages on its own nine-bracket schedule, from 1% up to 12.3%, with a standard deduction of $5,900 for single filers in 2026 — far smaller than the federal $16,100.
- State Disability Insurance (SDI): 1.3% of all wages in 2026; no wage ceiling since January 1, 2024.
- California's statewide minimum wage is $16.90 an hour from January 1, 2026; some cities and industries require more. Full-time at that rate is $35,152 a year, which keeps $29,613.28 after tax for a single filer.
- California's statewide sales tax rate is 7.25%, and most areas add district taxes on top.
- 2026 standard deduction: $5,900 single, $11,800 joint, $11,800 head of household; personal exemption credit $158 ($316 joint).
- Exemption credits shrink once federal AGI passes a threshold — $252,203 for single filers in 2025 ($504,411 joint, $378,310 head of household). FTB publishes the 2026 thresholds in late December, so these pages stop at $240,000, below the 2025 single threshold.
- Wage earners file a California return as well as the federal one; for 2026 income both are generally due April 15, 2027.
