Alaska rules that affect a paycheck
- Alaska has no personal income tax, but it is one of only three states (with New Jersey and Pennsylvania) that withhold an unemployment insurance contribution from workers.
- Unemployment insurance (employee share): 0.50% of the first $54,200, up to $54,200 of wages.
- Alaska's minimum wage rose from $13.00 to $14.00 an hour on July 1, 2026, and is scheduled to reach $15.00 on July 1, 2027. Full-time at that rate is $29,120 a year, which keeps $25,432.32 after tax for a single filer.
- The State of Alaska does not levy a sales tax at all.
- Because Alaska does not tax wages, there is no state income tax return to file for salary income; the federal return for 2026 is generally due April 15, 2027.
